12,000 SF – Gut Renovation & Major Addition to an Existing Single Family Home in Kings Point, NY
This project was a gut renovation and an expansion to an existing Tudor-styled house. The program intended to stay with the character of the Tudor style but modernize it, so the exterior would have a brighter feel to it and the interior would be open, airy, and welcoming. We demolished more than half of the existing structure, kept two rooms only, and expanded the house in two directions, creating an L-shaped plan to frame the garden and pool area. The only feature of the original structure that we kept was the ornate plaster ceiling of the dining room, everything else is new.
The exterior material is handmade brick with intricate brick patterns to create playfulness detailing in the more prominent areas around the entry of the house. We also used stucco with wood trimming in light colors to add the familiar detailing of Tudor-styled design and bring some lightness and relief to the heavy bricks. The roof is slate.
The house is two stories plus a livable cellar with plenty of natural lights for all the areas. The property had a magnificent, rare species of magnolia tree. We made sure the tree is visible and highlighted from the home office and library on the first floor where our client spends the majority of their time working, and the master bedroom on the second floor with a very large window opening leading to a terrace overlooking the tree.
We were hired to perform the Architectural Design, Interior Architectural Design, Garden Architectural Design, and Interior Design Services. We also were intimately involved with the construction of the house collaborating with a construction manager who supervised the construction, while we did off-site construction administration work as a Design Build Firm.
